Turning Earth

Turning Earth has created a haven for pottery makers, with four studios across London and more on the way. Each space is bright and open, dotted with hanging plants, creating a relaxing environment to get creative and join the makers community. Offering both flexible monthly memberships and starter courses, there are options for all abilities.

When it comes to sustainability, the team have implemented a number of initiatives. They are in the process of transitioning their studios to 100% renewable energy, meaning electrical power will come from wind, water, solar or biogen, and they have a waste reduction system in place to limit water usage wherever possible.

The aim? ‘To make the world a better plate’. Participation in ‘maker spaces’ can help replace consumerism, increasing both wellbeing and environmental sustainability. By “empowering people to make things they use every day and selling locally in the community, we can start to shift people’s mindsets.” We couldn’t agree more.

Why we love them:

  • Community: Reinventing the maker space ✓

  • Educational: Promoting creativity into everyday life ✓

  • Energy: Transitioning to renewable energy ✓

  • Social: Social enterprise

  • Waste: Waste reduction protocol ✓

  • Waste Management: Recycling initiatives and policies ✓

  • Water Conservation: Three-bucket water system to reduce water usage ✓

“The maker-space movement is part of a progressive shift to a more environmentally responsible society. When people make things locally, and sell them within their own community, it reduces fossil fuel freight, a significant contributor to global climate change.”
