Celebrate the Paris Olympics in London: Low Impact Activities Across the Capital

As the world turns its eyes to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games, London is set to celebrate the Olympic spirit in its own unique way. If you’re looking for ways to join in the excitement closer to home, the city offers plenty of options that are not only budget-friendly but also accessible and environmentally conscious too. Here's your guide to enjoy the Olympic buzz in London this summer!

Free Fan Zones

  1. Several areas across London will be transformed into Olympic Fan Zones, offering free entry and a chance to soak up the atmosphere with fellow sports fans. The four below are the office fan zones, but there are plenty more located all over London!

    • Battersea Power Station (link)

    • King’s Cross (Lewis Cubitt Square) (link)

    • Grosvenor Square, Mayfair (link)

    • Westfield Square, White City (link)

Each of the zones have events on over the next few weeks, with spcial guest appearances from GB athletes (past and present!), fitness classes and much much more. All of the official fan zones are also wheelchair accessible. You can find the full list of activities on the Team GB app here.

2012 Olympic Park

With the spirit of 2012 in the air, head down to Westfield Square in Stratford, conveniently located near the 2012 London Olympic Park. With places to watch on live screens at the London Aquatics Centre (£2-£3 per person) as well as free places to enjoy the games outside within the 560 acres of the Park.

Make a day of it and enjoy the many activities while you are there, from wildflowers parks and live music to outdoor climbing walls, you’ll find something for all the family.

Community Sports Taster Sessions

Feeling inspired from all of the amazing sports so far? Many local sports clubs and community centres are offering free or low-cost taster sessions in the Olympic sports.

    • Check your local leisure centre for other sports such as swimming, athletics, and gymnastics. Have a go at diving with taster courses at the London Aquatics centre.

    • Visit London's numerous parks for outdoor sports like beach volleyball at Hampstead Heath, tennis at Victoria Park or rowing on the Serpentine in Hyde Park.

Cycling Tours

Combine sightseeing with the Olympic spirit by joining a cycling tour of London's Olympic landmarks. Many tour operators offer accessible bikes and routes.

    • Follow the Thames path to see how the river played a role in the 2012 games.

    • Cycle through East London to witness the Olympic legacy in action.

Green Spaces and Picnic Spots

Pack a picnic and head to one of London's many parks to watch the games on your own device.

    • Richmond Park: Enjoy views of London while cheering on your favourite athletes.

    • Greenwich Park: The site of equestrian events in 2012, now perfect for a Olympic-themed picnic.

Inclusive Water Sports

Try your hand at some Paralympic sports with inclusive water activities on the Thames and in London's lidos.

    • Kayaking sessions at the Lee Valley White Water Centre

    • Adaptive rowing programs at various rowing clubs along the Thames

A quick final reminder to use public transport or cycle to these events where possible, so we can keep our Olympic celebrations as eco-friendly as possible. Many venues offer facilities for those with mobility needs, but it's always best to check in advance.

By participating in these activities, you'll not only join in the Olympic excitement but also support local communities and promote sustainable practices. Let's come together to celebrate sport, culture, and inclusivity right here in London!
