Spotlight: Arcola Theatre

Tucked away off the bustling Kingsland Road in Dalston (East London) you’ll find the humble and intimate Arcola Theatre. As one of the many hidden gems in the area, Arcola is known for supporting, promoting and creating opportunities for both established and emerging creative talent.

When we arrived on a gloomy October Monday night, someone was taking a quick nap on a sofa and the bar staff were laughing at something they had drawn on the chalkboard – the vibe was relaxed, open and friendly from the moment we walked in. Drinks in hand, we sidled into an intimate exposed brick studio and settled down to watch an hour of top-quality comedy from the electric Rose Matafeo. The show started at 19:30, ideal for those who still want to get their eight hours of beauty sleep. It was the perfect way to start the week.

Sustainability

Not only is it leading the way when it comes to environmental initiatives, its deep-rooted ethos championing diversity and accessiblity is evident throughout the theatre and their many programmes. With great value mid-week shows, workshops and community-based groups, Arcola also work with local schools and have a “pay what you can scheme” on Tuesdays to help reduce financial barriers.

In true creative fashion, the team were able to re-use some of the materials from the 2012 London Olympics and is now woven throughout the theatre. Even the toilet systems have been set up to prevent water waste. Out of sight but working their magic, solar panels are installed on the roof and there is a carbon neutral boiler heating the place. The steady determination to do good for people and planet, despite the challenges that come with it, doesn’t go unnoticed.

Only a two-minute walk from Dalston Junction station, if you’re looking for an excuse to try something new, with shows on most nights of the week, you’ll be sure to find something that’ll spark your interest at Arcola. Home to three studio spaces and a large open bar (with locally sourced drinks – might I add) there really is something for everyone to enjoy.
